Artist's Comments

A section of my final for Photointaglio, composed of six photopolymer plates, each approx. 16" x 23" on full sheets of either St. Armand handmade watercolor or Special Etching, or Arches watercolor paper (sheets approx. 22" x 30").

Three plates are from single (positive) film exposures, three are from variations of the films layered in pairs. This is one of the layerings.

The plates are developed in water, then inked like intaglio plates, and run through an etching press.

I've done multiple exposures, double exposures and intaglio before but this is so different.

Thank you for submitting them close up!

Thank you :) The possibilities with photopolymer are so broad and the potential for recording information on the plate is so great, that the medium is a great relief at times. The only things I prefer with copper though (not counting photo processes on copper, which we didn't cover and which require a pretty hazardous emulsion) are the weight of the plates (these can shift and be difficult to wipe), the ability to rework, and reuse.
